Interpretation In Favor Of Books Pages
Reviewers Note for Transparency's sake: I was asked by the author to read and offer my honest review of Pages, and her two other books, Reign of Secrets and Freedom Strategy. I also know S.J. in the real world, and I don't think that has bearing on my review, but it should be stated, again for transparency's sake.So I just finished Pages, and wanted to get a review written while the stories were still fresh in my mind.
As a whole, the anthology has a loose theme centered around the relationships in families: mothers, sons, daughters, grandparents and fathers. Some of the stories, like "The Favor" and "Summer Garden" have a personal feel, as if some of the events in the stories are excerpts taken from S.J's life, and it wouldn't surprise me if that instinct or suspicion turned out to be true.
The stories vary in writing style, from a collection of letters from a soldier to his mother during an undisclosed conflict in "Gifts of Devotion", to first person narrative in "Summer Garden", to (and the style of this one was my favorite) a collection of police reports, psychiatry notes, and audio transcripts in "Case File 13". I particularly liked Case File 13 because the details on the police reports and psychiatry files seemed pretty accurate to what you might find on such documents in real life. It's a testament to S.J's creativity, imagination, and personable writing style.
I did give Pages three stars though because I felt there needed to be better editing. Some phrases used redundant words (ex: instances of conjunctions like "that" being used two or three times in a single sentence), other phrases felt clunky and could've used some tinkering to get the point to flow better, and there were some elementary grammatical errors, that weren't consistent enough with the vocabulary of the narrator to be excused as colloquialisms. Basically, the editing was rough and made it hard to focus on the story sometimes.
All in all, it's a neat collection of stories that (despite the editing woes) often made me feel like I was walking through another persons memories, and I think that maybe what S.J. was going for.
